EU Project Pravo-Justice, in collaboration with the Helsinki Foundation for Human Rights, Project Sunflowers, and the Ministry of Justice of Poland, co-organized the international conference titled Accountability for the International Crimes Committed in Ukraine: Joint Efforts to Make It Happen.

The event, held in Warsaw on November 13, 2024, brought together policymakers, legal experts, academics, and representatives of civil society from Poland, Ukraine, and across Europe to explore critical efforts in addressing impunity for international crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine.

The conference focused on the importance of incorporating and implementing international criminal law into domestic legal frameworks to ensure justice for the victims of atrocities committed during the ongoing conflict. Key discussions centered on enhancing coordination among European and Polish accountability initiatives and promoting a comprehensive approach to safeguarding the rights of victims and survivors.

Tinna Goletiani, Senior International Expert of the EU Project Pravo-Justice, emphasized the broader global responsibility in securing accountability. "Accountability is not merely a matter of legal obligation or political expediency; it is a foundational pillar of sustainable peace and long-term stability. This is not just Ukraine’s struggle; it is a shared global responsibility. Therefore, the key to achieving effective accountability lies in meaningful and comprehensive international cooperation."

Oleksii Khomenko, Acting Prosecutor General of Ukraine, also addressed the conference, underscoring Poland's pivotal role in supporting Ukraine's efforts for justice accountability. Acting Prosecutor General stressed that "together we have already made significant progress, and we must continue to scale up these efforts to make Europe and the world safer."

The conference highlighted the need for continued international collaboration in the pursuit of accountability and the long-term goal of securing justice for those impacted by Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
